Environments for Aging’s 2024 Project Awards Roundup

Award-winning senior living projects and design strategies take the spotlight in Environments for Aging’s annual Design Showcase and Renovation and Remodel Competition.

Entries to both competitions are reviewed by a jury of industry professionals, with those projects earning awards demonstrating new approaches, strategies, and thinking toward the architecture and interior design of senior living environments.

Here, Environments for Aging recaps this year’s competition winners:

Design Showcase Award of Merit: Rose Villa Senior Living, Portland, Ore.

The completed third phase of Rose Villa’s campus transformation, submitted by Scott Edwards Architecture LLP (Portland, Ore.), prioritizes residents’ connection to the community with a full-service cafe and a childcare center. Other standout features include increasing access to daylight, nature, and the outdoors. Read here.

Design Showcase Honorable Mention: The Davis Community, Wilmington, N.C.

This addition and renovation sought to create a vibrant intergenerational hub, featuring a wellness center called The Promenade and independent living spaces, including 32 cottages and a 141-unit apartment building known as “The Residences.” Submitted by Lantz Boggio/Architects (Greenwood Village, Colo.), the project also expanded outdoor green spaces for walking and activities. The new 272,000-square-foot clubhouse at Moorings Park Grande Lake in Naples, Fla., expands amenities and independent living units at this luxury community. The project team includes Wegman Design Group (Naples, Fla.). Read here.

 

 

Design Showcase Honorable Mention: The Springs At Happy Valley, Happy Valley, Ore.

This independent living, assisted living, and memory care community is part of a new mixed-use development in Happy Valley, Ore., with offices, shops, and restaurants. As part of the project design, LRS Architects (Portland, Ore.) utilized park-like courtyards to help facilitate engagement with the greater community. Read here.

To enhance functionality and aesthetics with the community’s dining area, the project team, including Thoma-Holec Design (Mesa, Ariz.), focused on modernizing the décor, expanding capacity, and improving acoustics. Read here.

Remodel/Renovation Competition Silver Winner: The Virginian

The lobby renovation, by Focus Healthcare Partners (Chicago), created a welcoming and engaging setting for residents and staff, as well as a positive impression for visitors. Two grand staircases to improve circulation and new amenities to support resident engagement are part of this effort. Read here.
