The Virginian, an independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing community in Fairfax, Va., recognized the need to update its lobby into a welcoming and engaging setting for residents and staff while also creating a positive impression for visitors.
The project team, including Focus Healthcare Partners (Chicago), which submitted the project to the 2024 Environments For Aging Remodel/Renovation Competition, embarked on significant structural upgrades and a complete overhaul of the MEP systems to deliver a setting that would be both beautiful and functional.

Those efforts earned the project the Silver Award in this year’s competition.
Art elements connect to local community
As part of the renovation, underutilized areas were repurposed into inviting seating areas and a charming café.
Additionally, two grand staircases were added to enhance circulation, connect the lobby to surrounding amenities.
Art is thoughtfully used to connect to nature and the surrounding community, including an art gallery that overlooks the lobby as well as local artwork, including an art piece of the Washington Monument.
One juror lauded the project’s use of natural light and design features to create a more active and inviting environment. “The stairs are a fantastic feature for promoting fitness and well-being,” the juror added.
