The Davis Community, Wilmington, North Carolina: EFA 2024 Design Showcase Honorable Mention
The Davis Community in Wilmington, N.C., wanted to transform itself for a new generation of residents but the available land on its existing campus was broken up by several roads, a detention pond, and old water tower being used for cell service.
The project team, including submitting firm Lantz Boggio / Architects (Greenwood Village, Colo.), pushed past these challenges to modernize the existing skilled nursing community’s amenities while adding a four-story, 141-unit independent living building that includes dining, a theater, art room, and club room.
Additionally, 32 new independent living cottages along the west side of the property form a mini neighborhood with beach house charm, open floor plans, and refined finishes. At the heart of the campus is a new wellness and community center, The Promenade, housing fitness facilities, a pool, event space, and upscale restaurant that residents share with the greater neighborhood.
The Davis Community prioritizes intergenerational focus
Jurors appreciated the intergenerational focus of the new additions, which opened in June 2023. For example, the new fitness center not only contributes to the wellness of residents and staff but integrates Davis into the community, while the rest of the community center includes facilities for rentals and weddings.
They also recognized the project’s contemporary aesthetics that reflect a modernized low-country style as well as the use of natural materials to create warm, gracious, and inviting interiors.
