The community’s exterior design has been designed to complement its surroundings and provide a soothing and relaxing experience for residents, and multiple common areas for recreation or rest. Traditional and modern elements include locally sourced brick columns, gable roofs, and siding of various patterns.
Sunshine Retirement Living (Bend, Ore.) wanted to offer a senior living community to residents seeking modern aesthetics and a plethora of amenities. Maple Brook Terrace, a resort-style, independent living community in Mauldin, S.C., opened in August 2020 to fulfill that niche.
Proportion and balance were influential throughout the 155,000-square-foot project. The building is large, and the goal of the project team including Pinnacle Architects Inc. (Bend, Ore.), JSA Design (Portsmouth, N.H.), and Sunshine Retirement Interior Design (Bend) was to create a welcoming home for its residents. The community’s exterior design blends traditional and modern elements, such as ledgestone accents, gable roofs, and differently patterned and colored siding deliver rich and varied dimension that are reflective of the nearby residential South Carolina communities. The entry, adorned with striking ledgestone columns, opens to a grand two-story lobby and dining room balance with more intimate public areas such as library, theatre, and elevator lobbies. The interiors, inspired by boutique hotels, are soft and welcoming featuring a grey palette with hints of diffused blue and yellow for a comfortable ambiance and a cohesive design throughout.
The community features 130 units ranging from open-concept studios to two-bedrooms that feel spacious and warm due to the material choices of white cabinetry, granite countertops, and warm wood flooring. Most units enjoy private balconies overlooking a park-like setting.
Bocce ball, a fire pit, gazebo, and benches along the walking path encourage social interactions.
