Beach Terrace Memory Care, Stanton, Calif.
Owner Stanton Assisted Living LLC (Stanton, Calif.) and operator Seasons Living (Lake Oswego, Ore.) saw an opportunity to transform a neighborhood. Specifically, the team transformed a single-acre, triangular lot in Stanton, Calif., which was sandwiched between an irrigation channel and an arterial road and considered a neighborhood blight, into a mixed-use development.
The result is Beach Terrace Memory Care, a 66-unit, 110-bed assisted living and memory care community that serves the missing middle market of Orange County, Calif. The first floor of the 90,000-square-foot project boasts 5,000 square feet of commercial space, including a café, pharmacy, and reception area, in addition to a 20,000-square-foot parking garage and public plaza fronting the main street.
Indoor-outdoor living
The three-story project offers a cozy setting featuring a palette of warmer tones including browns and beiges, while floor-to-ceiling windows fill the rooms with natural lighting and views of the surrounding neighborhood.
The fully accessible community’s many common spaces are designed for socializing and gathering. Beach Terrace also offers a plethora of opportunities for indoor-outdoor living with outdoor lounge spaces for physical activities, gardening, gathering with friends, and relaxing
On the second level, two terraces of 5,000 square feet offer indoor-outdoor living. The roof terraces provide a secure private open space for the residents to enjoy outdoor activities and a connection with the outside world.
Assisted living unit design
Units on the second and third floor range from private, double occupancy, and twin rooms with Jack and Jill bathrooms. Common areas provide a central community space with a dining room opening to an outdoor seating and gardening area on the terrace and lounge. The outdoor space extends into another terrace where residents can enjoy physical activities.
The individual rooms and common living areas reflect a theme of comfort, expansiveness, and freedom, essential for those living with memory challenges.
Wide corridors offer themes such as beach, wetlands, and cottage per wing (three wings on each resident level of the T-shaped building). This eases wayfinding and alleviates disorientation.
Close attention to detail, such as entry doors with built-in memory boxes that can hold pictures of loved ones, also helps occupants to navigate their new home.
