Kaiser + Path (Portland, Ore.), a group of real estate developers, architects, and builders, set out to offer an affordable community for active adults who wish to stay connected to city arts and culture. One of the goals was to create a place where seniors could live independently and interact with multiple generations. Situated in a vibrant Portland neighborhood with shopping and restaurants, The Canyons is a 70-unit community that answers those needs.
The six-story, 110,000-square-foot community is 100 percent barrier-free, with solutions ranging from height-adjustable kitchen counters to curb-less showers to expansive widths in all common spaces. Construction uses cross-laminated timber (CLT), an engineered wood product, for seismic resilience and fire resistance, while an open-air atrium in the building’s center circulates outside air. Resident units feature their own HVAC system and are flexible to meet individual needs.
An on-site, 24-hour concierge provides a range of services and curates event programming for all residents, while a wellness room and fitness center help prioritize health and well-being. The ground floor houses The Alley, an outdoor marketplace with boutiques, restaurants, and wellness practitioners.
