Belmont Village San Ramon, San Ramon, California: 2026 EFA Design Showcase Honorable Mention
Located in the foothills of Mount Diablo, the Belmont Village San Ramon continuing care retirement community (CCRC) is designed to seamlessly connect indoor comfort with outdoor living in San Ramon, Calif. The 179,202-square-foot community, which opened in February 2025, offers 175 residences, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care.
Submitted to the Design Showcase by HKIT Architects (Oakland, Calif.), the project takes advantage of the region’s temperate climate and scenic topography. For example, the structure wraps around a central, west-facing courtyard to maximize views of the nearby mountains.
The interiors draw inspiration from the San Ramon Valley’s rolling hills and mature trees. Green hues in wall art and upholstery mimic the surrounding hills, while decorative wood columns define circulation paths. Brushed gold accents, decorative tile, and oversized custom lighting deliver an elegant yet comfortable home environment. Additionally, the team used wood from salvaged trees at the construction site to create custom furniture and signage, directly connecting the interior design to the site’s history.
Jurors were impressed by the project team’s use of architectural features to bridge indoor and outdoor spaces. For example, the first-floor fitness and dining areas, including The Bistro and Josephine’s Kitchen, feature a large window wall that opens to the courtyard. At sundown, The Bistro converts from a café to a full bar, where residents can enjoy the evening breeze and sip varietals grown in the neighboring Livermore Valley wine region.
