The Oak Cottage Of Santa Barbara will celebrate its open house event on March 28 in Santa Barbara, Calif. The 40-unit community will provide care for seniors experiencing memory loss.
Designed by Hochhauser Blatter Architects, the building will feature shingle siding, traditional gable roof forms, deep-bracketed overhangs, vegetated trellises, and a street-facing front porch. The project preserves a 70-year-old oak tree in the front yard—from which the community's name is derived. Tall ceilings, large windows for natural daylight and ventilation, and the use nontoxic finish materials are also part of the design.
It also includes memory care studios organized into small residential neighborhoods. Each one has a central common area with country-style kitchens, living rooms with fireplaces, sun rooms with skylights, an activities room, a bathing spa, residential laundries, activities space, and administrative offices.
The project started construction in June 2013. The project team includes Insite Engineering (civil); David R Black & Associates (landscape); Davar & Associates Inc. (mechanical and plumbing); JMPE Electrical Engineering & Lighting Design (electrical); and Ashley & Vance Engineering (structural).
