Diving Into Wellness At Spring Lake Village

When Spring Lake Village, a CCRC in Santa Rosa, Calif., was built 25 years ago, its fitness amenities were more of an afterthought than a priority. In fact, the pool was located next to the delivery loading dock and exercise equipment was crammed into a small room.

When the owner embarked on a modern-day renovation to modify the existing senior community as well as add new programming and buildings, it took the opportunity to better appeal to seniors’ desire to stay fit and healthy.

The project, which earned an Honorable Mention from the EFA Design Showcase jury, includes new independent living villas, assisted living memory support, improved dining venues, and activity spaces.

Health and wellness moved to the forefront inside a new fitness/auditorium building near the community’s entry. Inside, the aerobics space, program areas, spa, and exercise room benefit from large windows, increased daylighting, and views to the pool.

The results look promising: Resident interaction and participation in fitness activities has increased and the facility overall had 100 percent occupancy at its opening in December 2014.
