Skilled nursing provider groups blast Obama’s 2013 budget

Skilled nursing provider groups reacted negatively Monday to President Obama’s 2013 budget recommendations, which propose $360 billion in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and other healthcare programs.

Under Obama’s budget, Medicare would reduce payments to nursing homes for post-acute care and cut bad debt payments owed to skilled nursing facilities.

Sunrise teams with HGTV’s Henderson on design tips for seniors

Sunrise Senior Living has partnered with designer Emily Henderson, host of HGTV’s Secrets From a Stylist, on a campaign to educate its assisted living residents on design and aging, according to a company announcement.

Henderson will educate Sunrise’s residents and their families to design their Sunrise suites in ways “that reflect their interests and personal histories,” the company said.

When a resident couple’s romance ends

Madeline (pseudonym) is in her 50s and has lived here for over a year. Yesterday, she moved to a smaller facility owned by the same company. She hopes she will have more freedom and be able to go outside when she wants.

Madeline did not know she was leaving yesterday, but knew it could be any day. She left before lunch so I do not know if other residents got to say goodbye. People will surely miss Madeline because she helped with activities many times, and she was also the best buddy of the facility dog Brutus.

While anyone that works in senior living as an operator, marketer, architect or designer understands that the answer is yes—and always will be yes—the newbie's to senior living don't seem to understand why this question is so odd to us.

Obama promises $156 million to fight Alzheimer’s, support caregivers

The Obama administration is spending $130 million now through 2013 to fund research into Alzheimer’s disease, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday.

An additional $26 million will be used for caregiver support, provider education, public awareness and improvements in data infrastructure for Alzheimer’s, according to the announcement.

Most states to see Medicaid matching rates decline in 2014

Between 29 and 32 states are projected to experience Medicaid funding declines under recalculation of the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) during fiscal year 2014, according to the National Association of Medicaid Directors.

Between four and seven states are projected to see an increase in matching Medicaid funds, the association said in its report.
