A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Mercy Housing Lakefront, the new 74,100-sqaure-foot housing development for veterans and their families on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Illiana Health Care campus in Danville, Ill.
Mercy Housing Lakefront is part of the VA's national Enhanced-Use Lease program which seeks to reuse underutilized VA properties to create safe, affordable, and permanent housing for homeless veterans and their families.
The first phase will include 65 new accessible and adaptable apartments, ranging in size from one to three bedrooms, as well as a new community center. The center will welcome other members of the VA community, creating an intergenerational gathering.
Perkins Eastman is providing design services as well as planning and site programming. The development is targeting LEED Silver certification.
