Ashton Meadows Nursing Home, Brighton, U.K.
Opened in July 2024, Ashton Meadows Nursing Home fills a need for advanced care for dementia, post-hospital rehabilitation, and palliative services in Brighton, U.K.
Designed by interior design firm DesignLSM (Brighton, U.K.) and architecture firm ADG Architects (Forest Row, East Sussex, U.K.), the 68-bed community blends contemporary elegance with a touch of classic charm, prioritizing comfort, functionality, and safety.
For example, the reception and bistro area is inspired by orangeries (a room or building where orange and other fruit trees are protected during the winter) and features natural light and green tones to evoke a sense of tranquility.
Contemporary senior living design
The community includes skilled nursing, dementia, and hospice residents. The four-story community houses three dining rooms, two quiet lounges, an activity room, theater, and hair salon. Resident bedrooms are located on the ground, first, and second floors.
Bespoke designs are included in all resident bedrooms, such as a headboard panel on the wall to anchor the bed within the space, as well as wardrobes and desk units.
Calming neutral wall colors including sky blue, sage green, and beige, and paneled walls stand out among the design features, as well.
Wayfinding highlights local landmarks
Corridors on each of the three floors are themed, including local waterways, seasons, and history, to aid navigation and orientation.
Spaces such as the second-floor lounge echo local landmarks, such as Hampton Court Palace (the home of Henry VIII). The artwork similarly references the local area, providing a sense of place.
In the second-floor dining area, a marble faux fireplace creates a focal point with brass and opal ceiling lights alongside wall and ceiling paneling.
