The idea: Bethesda Terrace, a 10-acre senior living retirement community in St. Louis, recently completed expansion and renovation plans that included addressing an underutilized commons space and the creation of a multiuse living/dining/activity room. Separate from the scope of the interior project, the owners also wanted to beautify the outdoor space just outside this commons area.
How they did it: The design team first focused on defining clear activity and gathering spaces. The commons space was previously designed and furnished with minimal flexibility, which made it difficult for residents to gather or to enjoy the space. A hospitality bar, soft-seating arrangements, and tables/chairs for dining, games, and coffee were incorporated to liven up the atmosphere of the room and to provide a variety of seating options for the different activities. A new TV viewing area was also added.
Vibrant blues and oranges paired with neutral browns and tans update the look while blending with the community’s current design. Enclosing the existing library space at the far end of the room provided residents another choice of space to use when seeking a more intimate and quiet environment. The new reading area features cozy seating in front of the fireplace.
The big reveal: By selecting lightweight yet sturdy furniture, the design team was able to deliver a flexible space that was easily modified to meet the needs of the residents and optimize the use of the space. The view of the new landscape was framed with neutral window treatments that complemented the interior but did not distract from the exterior view. Since the redesign, the commons space has become a new hub of socialization for the community’s residents.
