The Woodlands at Canterfield is a 129-unit luxury senior living community that offers 91 assisted living units and 40 memory care beds in West Dundee, Ill.
The community was designed to create a nurturing atmosphere for seniors in a refined setting that promotes hospitality, wellness, and community.
Located on a 9-acre site that formerly housed an apple orchard, the 137,000-square-foot community is designed with a woodland aesthetic.
Designed by AG Architecture (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and RDG Planning and Design (Des Moines, Iowa), the split-level building features a fiber cement panel and stone veneer exterior.
Upon entering the building, residents and guests are greeted by a dramatic two-story lobby with abundant natural light and a signature tree sculpture, in reference to the fruit trees that once grew there.
Biophilic design elements
Biophilic principles guided the design with careful consideration of daylighting, finish selections including wood ceilings and wood-look floors, and textured wallcoverings including a gilded leaf pattern in the dining room.
Additionally, abstracted water photography in the bistro and back-lit, tree-themed sculptural elements at the entrances to the assisted living and memory care units are among the organic-themed artwork featured throughout the community.
Residential features for seniors
Opened in June, the community’s assisted living residences offer four layout options in studio and one- and two-bedroom configurations. Each unit includes a kitchenette with full-size stainless-steel appliances, maple cabinets, and granite countertops. The community also provides a guest suite for visitors.
The secure memory care wing, which features studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom companion suites, is designed with clear sight lines and wide pathways to keep residents safe and comfortable. Digital screens located adjacent to each suite’s front door allow family members to upload familiar photos to help residents recognize their unit.
Additionally, the project integrates 16,000 square feet of amenities including a fitness center, spa, salon, theater, pub, clubrooms with fireplaces, and dynamic dining venues. Outside, residents can access a patio with a fire pit, bocce ball court, and putting green.
