The Riviera Alexandria in Alexandria, Virginia

The Riviera Alexandria, an independent living community that will complement The Landing (Phase 1) and complete the full continuum campus under construction in Alexandria, Va., The Riviera and Landing campus aims to meet growing demand for luxury senior living in a walkable, urban setting with access to culture, nature, and healthcare.

The 183,000-square-foot community delivers on that need with spacious residences featuring one and two bedrooms, elevated finishes, high ceilings and an abundance of natural light with  curated amenities such as multiple branded dining venues, a spa, rooftop terrace, fitness center, and theater, artist’s maker space, along with personalized services including concierge and valet support.

Design inspiration for The Riviera Alexandria

Scheduled to open in early 2026, the 7-story building will include 129 residential units. The project draws inspiration from its waterfront setting and Historic City of Alexandria surroundings, while expansive windows provide abundant natural light that contributes to a sense of openness and calm, creating an atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting.

To support aging in place for residents, the design incorporates wide, well-lit corridors for easy navigation, roll-in showers to reduce tripping hazards, large open kitchen designs that emphasize accessibility, convenience and function.

Overlooking the Potomac River, the site inspired a calming natural tone color palette featuring muted blues, gentle grays, warm neutrals, and brushed metallics to create a calming, water-influenced atmosphere.

Sustainable design to promote seniors’ wellness and comfort

The Riviera Alexandria integrates energy-efficient systems such as LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and Energy Star–rated appliances to reduce energy and water consumption without compromising comfort. High-performance building insulation and glazing help maintain consistent indoor temperatures, enhancing resident comfort while lowering utility demand.

Features like needlepoint bipolar ionization technology, MERV-13 air filtration, touchless technology, and zoned HVAC systems are design to deliver air filtration and reduce cross-contamination, as well as support the project’s goal of achieving U.S. Green Building Council LEED Silver certification.

The Riviera Alexandria incorporates biophilic design through expansive windows with river views, outdoor terraces, and abundant natural light, fostering a strong connection to nature. The building connects via secure walkway on the garage level to The Landing, The Riviera’s sister assisted living community (completed in 2022), offering residents a seamless continuum of care.
