The Chelsea at Washington Township In New Jersey

Completed in October 2023, The Chelsea at Washington Township, in Township of Washington, N.J., is a luxury assisted living and memory care community in historic Bergen County, N.J.

Owner Capitol Seniors Housing (Washington, D.C.), operator Chelsea Senior Living (Fanwood, N.J.), and architect and interior designer Meyer (Ardmore, Pa.) converted a former tennis court pavilion into the 76,700-square-foot senior living community to fill a gap in services for seniors in Bergen County.

The Chelsea at Washington Township houses 85 residential units with one- and two-bedroom options. Amenities include a variety of spacious common areas such as a bistro, theater, salon, sports lounge, and a private courtyard for memory care residents.

A nod to Seven Chimneys

The overall architecture of The Chelsea at Washington Township is based on a comprehensive area context review and inspired by Washington Township’s oldest home, Seven Chimneys. This residence, which exemplifies early Dutch architecture in the U.S., was built in 1745 and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

As a nod to this historical architecture, the new senior living community features seven chimneys throughout the building and its exterior design aligns seamlessly with the traditional, manor-style homes found in Bergen County, N.J.

Interior design incorporates traditional highlights

The interior design employs a warm, neutral color palette with blue accents and natural materials that features traditional interior architectural details and highlights.

Various natural materials are also used throughout interior spaces, including stacked-stone wall cladding and warm wood flooring to create a high-end residential atmosphere while grounding the transition from exterior to interior spaces.

Carefully designed bold patterns, deep-blue accent colors, and highly detailed millwork add depth to the community’s sophisticated design. Each amenity space is designed to have its own identity, creating a sense of hospitality throughout.
