Touchmark (Beaverton, Ore.) wanted to change how residents, their families, and employees gather and socialize at Touchmark at Fairway Village in Vancouver, Wash. With the help of interior design firm Spellman Brady & Company (St. Louis, Mo.), the owner pursued a full interior renovation of 78,580 square feet of public corridors; resident amenities, including a health and fitness club; and operational office areas.

Inspired by the community’s Pacific Northwest roots, “industrial farmhouse” design was introduced throughout, with materials drawing from the lush topography and local style. Examples include large metal sliding doors and storefronts; wooden beams; brick, stone, wrought iron, and shiplap adorning walls; and locally quarried basalt stone on the new fireplace.

Revitalization was achieved not just by bringing elements of the outdoors inside, but also by capturing unusable square footage, providing new multifunctional spaces, and creating synergy between adjacent gathering spaces. Major floor plan changes were required and some of the iconic architectural elements, such as the grand staircase that residents treasured, had to be removed to make way for new possibilities. Removing the staircase allowed the square footage to be infilled, providing additional useable space in its place.

On the first floor, the new space hosts a fireplace that greets visitors and draws them into the heart of the community upon arrival. The second-floor infill houses a new location for the community library.  Moving the library opened an area near the lobby, enabling the required expansion of the salon space. The former coffee shop was relocated closer to the main kitchen, allowing the menu to expand, and providing the desired casual dining venue for a bistro. The design also allows the bistro to host private events without affecting normal dining activities. All new spaces encourage socialization, bolster wellness, and support a vibrant active lifestyle. The renovation provided residents with a sophisticated environment while also improving the efficiency of operations.
