Capitol Seniors Housing (Washington, D.C.) and Chelsea Senior Living (Fanwood, N.J.) sought to transform a former Marriott Residence Inn—an outdated and distressed property located in the heart of Long Island, N.Y —into a high-end senior living community.

With the help of architecture and interior design firm Meyer Senior Living Studio (Ardmore, Pa.) the partners created their vision for the adaptive reuse of the hotel to become The Residences at Plainview (Plainview, N.Y.), a 55+ independent living community.

The design aesthetic was inspired by the Long Island beach community with large, airy spaces, ample natural light, indoor and outdoor pools, and pastel finishes invoking a sense of being on vacation, as well as the elegance of New York city as evident by a sports bar and gourmet, restaurant-style dining. This balance can be found in the design elements throughout the community.

The 145,000-square-foot project offers a dining room overlooking a hardscaped outdoor patio and pool; a two-story open lobby with a full-height fireplace; as well as bistro, bar, and lounge areas. On the second floor, a new amenity-rich main street, including a beauty salon, barber shop, and central library, has been created in one central location.

With a focus on resident fitness and wellness, the project includes a gym, locker rooms, massage rooms, sauna, indoor pool, yoga room, beauty salon, barber shop, a home health office, and two wellness rooms for on-site consultations. Outdoor amenities include a putting green, gardens, and a sylvan walking path.

The Residences offers 116 units with studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options, each with its own walkout patio or porch.
