The Glen at Scripps Ranch is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) nestled on a 53-acre site in the scenic hills of North San Diego County, home to the oldest mission in California. The community took a phased approach to construction and opening, with the final phase for the independent living community and amenities opening in early 2020.
KTGY, BraytonHughes Design Studios lead CCRC design
The community’s locale inspired the site-specific architectural design by KTGY (Irvine, Calif.), which led site planning and concept design and worked with BraytonHughes Design Studios (San Francisco, Calf.), leveraging hospitality and residential principles to create comfortable spaces with a sense of approachable luxury. Buildings feature contemporary interpretations of classic elements inspired by San Diego’s Spanish Colonial style. Through a holistic approach to addressing mental, emotional, and spiritual health, the design also creates a strong sense of place to give residents a feeling of purpose and belonging.
In designing the interiors for the public areas, including the commons building, pool house, and circulation and public spaces in the independent living units building, BraytonHughes brought a fresh approach to the aesthetic, with lightly colored walls and warm-toned wood as well as custom Spanish Revival-inspired carpets. The color palette features warm golds and blues, calling to mind the region’s expansive blue skies and ocean.
Kay + Hannah Art Advisory art program
A locally inspired art program led by Mary Hannah of comprehensive art consulting firm Kay + Hannah Art Advisory (San Francisco) features a landscape oil painting of Borrego Palms by local Orange County artist Jim Wodark that depicts the Anza-Borrego Desert and Borrego Valley.
The commons building, which includes a billiards room, card room, auditorium, theater, art center, library, bar and dining rooms, and connecting pool house, acts as the heartbeat of the community, providing a centralized hub for activities and socialization. At the health center, residents can access assisted living, memory care, and long-term care.
The memory care residences opened Sept. 2021; assisted living is expected to open in mid-November; and the skilled nursing community is slated to open early 2022.
