The 83,433-square-foot community brings assisted living to the Sturbridge campus in Hilliard, Ohio.
Published: October 17, 2019

Strategized to accommodate middle- to low-income seniors, The Ashford at Sturbridge, an assisted living community opened in April, added the missing piece needed to turn the Sturbridge campus into a continuing care retirement community in Hilliard, Ohio.

The main design principle included abandoning the idea of traditional, hospital-like institutional design in favor of creating a community based on a resident-centered, hospitality approach, making quality of resident life, improved resident outcomes, and customer and staff satisfaction priorities.

While square-footage stayed similar to higher-price-point facilities, overall expenses were kept down with strategic/programmatic decisions. Money was spent on high-cost, high-impact products that are long-lasting and can’t easily be replaced. Placed on an underutilized site within the campus, the project takes advantage of nearby walking trails, a golf course, shopping malls, and medical care clinics.
