Minnesota Veterans Home, Montevideo, Minnesota
Opened in 2023, the 106,000-square-foot Minnesota Veterans Home in Montevideo, Minn., follows the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Small House Model Design Guide, which outlines design considerations for creating a personalized, homelike environment for veterans needing long-term care.
Here, the 72-bed community is organized into households of 18 private rooms arranged around a shared living space, kitchen, and dining area.
In keeping with the small house model, lounges, kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, activity rooms, and outdoor patios feature a residential scale and character.
Interior prioritizes rustic design
For the interior design, the project team including Perkins Eastman (design architect; Chicago) and Wold Architects and Engineers (local architect; St. Paul, Minn.) chose rustic furnishes for the community spaces and households, including textured plaid fabrics, natural stone and brick walls and fireplaces, wood trim, and artwork that reflects the local landscape.
Floor-to-ceiling windows in gathering areas bring in plentiful daylight and provide views to the outdoors. Additionally, each neighborhood features an outdoor courtyard that serves as an extension of the interior common spaces.
Town Center-theme amenity space
A Town Center features amenities such as a café, theater, therapy space, and library.
Located off the back of the main building, a 4,500-square-foot community building and adjacent public park provide spaces for residents, students from Montevideo’s public schools, and the community to interact, fostering intergenerational connections.
