Logan Intergenerational Family Education (LIFE) Center, Logan, Kansas

The Logan Intergenerational Family Education (LIFE) Center in Logan, Kan., will bring together a long-term senior living community with a new elementary school.

The need for this project arose from the space constraints on an existing pre-K through 4th grade school in the rural community.

Logan also needed a new senior care facility, and the nonprofit Dane G. Hansen Foundation (Logan) spearheaded by board member Brien Stockman, worked with HFG Architecture (Witchita, Kan.) to provide a solution for the community.

The Logan community united around the intergenerational vision and passed a bond issue to fund the project, which is envisioned to strengthen community bonds.

Small-house model

Expected to open in October 2024, the 64,000-square-foot manor care community is based on a small-house model and will feature three 12-bed units. Each unit is designed to function independently with its own kitchen and dining space.

The pods are each designed with unique color palettes to help residents identify their respective spaces, with memory boxes outside each bedroom that residents can customize with family photos, mementos, and other personal items.

Prioritizing intergenerational experiences

The LIFE Center will provide senior residents with the opportunity to stay engaged in their community and in children’s lives as they attend the elementary school.

Intersecting the senior living community and the school is a playground and a gymnasium. Senior living residents will be encouraged to take advantage of the easy access to the facilities to go watch games being played as well as activities at the nearby high school.

Designed to mimic typical aesthetics in the region, the school and gymnasium are metal buildings that are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and wind in northwest Kansas. A public storm shelter will double as a community activity room for Logan residents to use.
