First Look: Smith Village

A $22.3 million modernization project will add private suites in the community’s rehab and skilled nursing care wing.

To respond to the demand for more private suites and contemporary common areas for short-term stay rehab and skilled nursing care residents, Smith Village in Chicago’s historic Beverly-Morgan Park neighborhood has begun construction to modernize its Johanson Wing.

Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the continuing care retirement community’s (CCRC) comprehensive interior renovation plan, which includes decreasing the number of licensed beds from 100 to 78 to provide 66 private suites for short-term stay rehab and skilled nursing care residents and 12 shared rooms.

In addition, construction of a three-story, 10,204 square-foot extension to the current building will add state-of-the-art therapy rooms on the first floor and dining rooms on the second and third floors. When completed, the CCRC will comprise 62,188 square feet of residences, common areas, and offices.

The project is expected to be completed in spring 2022. RLPS Architects is serving as architect and Merlino Design Partners, Inc. is the interior design firm on the project.
