Brightview Harrison, Harrison, New York
The Brightview Harrison senior living community in Harrison, N.Y., was developed to bring upscale senior living to New York’s Westchester County area.
Located on the site of former rock quarry, Brightview Harrison houses 144 units including 66 independent living units, 50 assisted living units, and 28 memory care units. The community takes advantage of the location’s dramatic natural surroundings, with scenic gardens and courtyards. For example, an existing 80-foot granite rock wall located at the rear of the site creates a striking focal point, with repurposed stone and landscaping added to soften the setting.
Indoor-outdoor connections at Brightview Harrison
The project team, including architecture firm Market Square Architects (Portsmouth, N.H.) and interior design firm Aumen Asner (Baltimore), delivered a modern farmhouse aesthetic for the community. Specifically, the front entry features a modern farmhouse gable with balconies, and the right wing of the building features a traditional gambrel-style roof.
A key priority on the project was connecting indoor and outdoor spaces for residents, including an interior bar that transitions to an outdoor terrace. In the assisted living community, an activity space and library/cafe is connected to a south-facing garden with planters for gardening.
Lighting strategies for senior living
The design team also used access to abundant light as an intentional design tool on the project, inviting warmth within the building.
The building’s open-concept design encourages residents and staff to flow between spaces, with a moveable partition that allows the pub in the independent living area to connect to the multipurpose room for functions. The memory care area includes an open floor plan and open sightlines to give staff easy views to the amenity spaces.
