Affordable housing developer HRI Communities is planning to renovate the Touro Shakspeare Home, a former nursing home and almshouse (shown above), into an affordable independent living community, in New Orleans’ historic Algiers neighborhood.

The 72,575-square-foot independent living community will include 52 one-bedroom units.

Situated on 7.7 acres, the project will also include weather-resilient design features including fortified roof systems, a back-up generator, storm-rated windows/doors, and flood-hardy construction.

Amenities will include on-site parking, gardened open-air courtyards, and green spaces. As part of the project, the building’s chapel will be renovated to a community center.

The project team comprises HCI Architecture (architect of record; New Orleans) and Landis Construction (general contractor; New Orleans).
